Songs about war are timeless and a part of American culture. In this talk, James Nash reflects on how he came to write "Russell County Gorge" about US Marine Corps 1st Lt. Ryan McGlothlin, killed in Iraq in 2005. Over the course of two years traveling and performing the song, James found Ryan's story led to emotional and often unexpected connections with listeners, including other Marines.
James is a singer songwriter and lead guitarist for The Waybacks and The Nashvillains, and he frequently joins Bob Weir, Michelle Shocked and other musicians for live shows. James performs "Russell County Gorge" with the TEDxAlcatraz house band: Alisa Rose on violin, and Peter Gregson playing cello. We thank Ryan McGlothlin's family for photographs and for their support with this project. Speaking from prison, Iraqi war veteran Andrew "Sarge" Chambers tells the story of how he got there. As the judge told him when he sentenced Chambers to 10 years at Marion Correctional: "Your time in Iraq makes you a threat to society." Chambers reminds us of the sacrifices that linger with soldiers -- and simply asks us to listen.
Andrew "Sarge" Chambers proudly hails from Pickerington, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army and has maintained the habit he acquired there of cursing just a bit too much. Throughout his service, Sarge was also able to maintain and hone his sense of honor and kindness, but the experience did slightly alter his sense of humor. While categorically not a morning person, when he is able to finally pry his eyes open, he always thinks to himself that he would rather be fishing. Most of his days are filled with coaching softball, Garth Brooks songs and thoughts of the family he hopes to be able to start soon. He is taking the stage to tell his story, parts of which can be seen in the documentary Operation Resurrection: The Warrior Returns. After TEDxMarionCorrectional he will work on his next unique thing.

Ao condenar Chambers a dez anos na Marion Correctional, o juiz disse: "Seu período no Iraque faz de você uma ameaça para a sociedade". "How do you read more? The answer is not to read more. The answer is to read always. The incentive for reading can and should come from each of us." Like so many of us, Pedro Pacífico had his ups and downs as a reader until he decided to see reading as a daily habit worth sharing. He is a lawyer who graduated from USP (University of Sao Paulo), and today is responsible for Book.ster, one of the largest Brazilian Instagram profiles dedicated to literature, where more than 90,000 followers have tips, reviews, and comments on his reading experience every day. In addition to social networking, Pedro also has a website and a YouTube channel.

"Como ler mais? A resposta não é ler mais. A resposta é ler sempre. O incentivo à leitura pode e deve sim partir de cada um de nós." Como tantos de nós, Pedro teve seus altos e baixos como leitor até decidir enxergar a leitura como um hábito diário que merece ser compartilhado. Hoje, o advogado formado pela USP é responsável pelo Book.ster, um dos maiores perfis brasileiros do Instagram dedicado à literatura. Communication is the very foundation of our ability to thrive in life. But what happens when our disability hinders our ability to communicate? Millions of deaf children around the world lack proper education, which affects the quality of life as adults. Growing up deaf, Nyle now shares his vision of improving the lives of deaf children around the world. He manages to get his message across loud and clear - communication is always possible.

Nyle DiMarco is a model, an actor and also an activist. In 2014 he became the second male winner and the first deaf contestant to win America's Next Top Model. Only two years later he added the Mirror Ball Trophy to his collection after winning Dancing with the Stars. As a model, he has walked the runway for Giorgio Armani at Milan Fashion Week. Yet, his greatest achievement was to become the face of the deaf community and disabled people worldwide.


Comunicação é a base para crescer na vida. Mas o que acontece quando uma deficiência impede a capacidade de nos comunicarmos? Milhões de crianças surdas ao redor do mundo não têm educação apropriada, o que afeta sua qualidade de vida como adultos. Tendo crescido surdo, Nyle agora compartilha sua visão de melhorar a vida de crianças surdas no mundo. Ele consegue passar sua mensagem de forma clara: a comunicação é sempre possível.
